Exploring Pretoria

8/13/2013

On Sunday we awoke with absolutely no plans for the day, something somewhat out of the ordinary from our usually jam packed weekends. Feeling hungry and lost for ideas we decided to head on over to brunch at a place called Harrie's pancakes. We received excellent service from a waiter who served us our homemade ginger beers (made with actual beer), smoked haddock pancakes, trout salad, and fig preserve and pecan pancakes...delish. Energized and awake we decided to spend the day outside. First stop was Magnolia Dell park, a place where the bf spent a lot of time playing as a child.

Since we were enjoying the sun so much we decided that today would be good for some proper touristy activity. This brought us to Voortrekker monument, a massive granite structure  located on a hilltop, which was raised to commemorate the Voortrekkers who left the Cape Colony between 1835 and 1854.  The inside of the monument has a small museum with the history of the Voortrekker movement. The best part, however, was climbing a tiny, winding staircase to the top, revealing a magnificent view of Pretoria.

On our way home I requested we drive through the town center, the "dangerous" part of town (aka Sunnyside) mostly just because I was curious of what it was like. Fortunately as it was Sunday it was not too crowded and therefore not that scary. It's a shame that this part of town is not the safest because there are tons of beautiful old buildings that I would have loved to explore.

To end the day we made a quick stop at the Union Buildings which form the official seat of the South African government and also house the offices of the president of South Africa. Although we couldn't go inside, the outside of the building has beautiful gardens where I was able to snap some photos of the sunset.

Exhausted, we finally made it home and I somehow managed to cook up some spaghetti with a tomato, onion, bell pepper, sausage sauce for dinner.

I love days like these <3
