Safari Time: Pilanesberg Game Reserve

One of the highlights of my trip was spending four days and three nights at the Ivory Tree Game Lodge which is located right outside of Pilanesberg Game Reserve and only two hours from Pretoria. We got a reduced rate since we knew one of the staff members, but even at the regular rate it is more than affordable considering three meals a day plus tea and two game drives a day are included in the price.

The guest lodges were very roomy with a large king size bed and a HUGE bathtub. There was also an outdoor shower, which would have been more enjoyable if it hadn't been so cold in the mornings and evenings.  The rooms don't have television or free wi-fi, but it was nice to take a break from technology (except that I still brought my iPad tsk tsk).

Like I mentioned, the stay included two daily game drives, one at sunrise and one at sunset. Since we chose to rest the first afternoon we got there we went on a total of 5 drives. Each one was special in it's own way. I'm pretty sure the group we were with was good luck because we saw tons of rare spottings, including both leopards lion cubs twice. Our game driver Renain was absolutely amazing and went out of his way to try and find the animals we wanted to see. It was clear how passionate he is about his job and the wildlife.

If you are planning to visit both Kruger and Pilanesberg I would suggest going to Pilanesberg second. Both parks are amazing, but since Pilanesberg is smaller the animals tend to be more concentrated than Kruger. Either way you're in for an absolute treat!
