Ukutula: Playing with Lions

Guys, I cuddled, played with, got hugged by, and walked with lions...one of my biggest childhood dreams has officially come true.

This was probably the biggest highlight of my entire trip. We almost didn't do it because it was quite pricey (about $65 per person) but I can honestly say it was worth every penny.  The tour consisted of two parts: walk with lions and lion interaction. On the walk with lions the guests went on a short walk with some of the younger lions who were about two years old. The caretakers fed them dead chicks to distract them. For the interaction you get to hold the baby lions (some were only a week old aww!!!!), pet and play with the 3-6 month year olds (they are called the "devils" because they like to get into trouble), and see all of the full grown lions and other big cats that the sanctuary has.

At one point one of the toddlers jumped up and "hugged" me from behind trying to play with the jacket I had tied around my waist. It was scary and amazing at the same time. I was pretty tempted to quit my job right then and start a new life living with the lion cubs.

If you are ever visiting Pretoria or Johannesburg go to Ukutula and spend the day playing with lions. You won't regret it.
