A Rant About "Stuff"

10/11/2013

Every since I've been traveling pretty regularly an interesting thing has been happening to me. Each time I return from a trip and return to my room I am instantly overwhelmed by how much "stuff" I have. After getting used to living out of a suitcase, returning to a room of clutter and knick knacks has become too much for me to handle.

I was able to live comfortably without all this "stuff" for an extended period of time whilst traveling. So why did I really need it? If you had told 17 year-old Melissa that the mere presence of material things, rather than the acquisition of them, would become a form of stress in her life one day she would have thought you were completely nuts.

Lately I've had an unexplainable urge to remove clutter from my life rather than add to it. It started one weekend when I decided to spontaneously clean out my bathroom and throw away all of the products that were old or not being used. My organization fest then moved to my bedroom, where I took half of the clothes out of my closet to be donated. Currently, I am on a mission to reduce my nail polish collection down to 3 or 4 that I truly love (free nail polish anyone?)

Possessing the knowledge that I do not HAVE to go out and buy stuff has made me feel free. Formerly, I would go to Target or the mall weekly out of habit. And each week I would come back with more stuff, as if almost out of obligation. But now things are slightly different. I do not deny myself the occasional trip to Target nor the purchase of something I actually need or really want. However, I do not feel that I have to purchase something just for the sake of buying something new. It's really refreshing.

My minimalist attitude went on to the point where I starting putting together an entire Minimalism board on Pinterest.

Ideally I would like to get to a point where I can contain all my belongings within a few suitcases, but I definitely still have a while until that will be possible. But hey...you gotta start somewhere...

Has anyone else recently adopted a minimalistic attitude?...or do ya'll just think I'm crazy ;-)
