Rietvlei Nature Reserve

One of the great things about South Africa is that you never have to go far in order to be able to see animals. Last weekend we spent a few hours at the Rietvlei Nature Reserve which is a quick 15-20 minute drive from Pretoria East.  This is not a reserve by any means that will give you a proper safari experience but it is a nice getaway away from the hustle and bustle of the city.  It is also very cheap compared to other reserves.

Supposedly there are tons of rhino here but sadly we were not able to spot any =( We did, however, see a good number of other animals including zebra, a variety of buck, ostriches, a jackal, and many species of birds.

We stopped at the coffee shop in the middle of the reserve for some drinks (we didn't eat there since I had read that the food was not so great and had eaten a late breakfast).

Zebra butts

The two buck in the middle were having a duel
He's saying "you better keep the hell away from me!"

Captured this little guy while he was capturing his lunch!

Wild donkeys! Just kidding they were in a pen by the coffee shop.

Can you spot the jackal? He's a master at camoflauge.

After we got tired of driving around we went over to Irene Mall to walk around and have lunch.  Irene Mall is one of the nicer malls that I've been to here due to it's open air plan and nice selection of restaurants. It's also known for its cow statue...made to look like the cow is upside down and partially underground with only its legs and udder showing. Of course my boyfriend made me take a picture with it which I did so super reluctantly:

All in all, if you're looking for something naturesque to do in Pretoria but don't want to spend a lot of money or time driving, Rietvli is a perfect place to spend a few hours.

Cost: R40 per person
